Review: 2020 Ford Explorer

The Explorer is a third row SUV completely redesigned. It has an all-new look, better safety features, new technology, and all the power and performance you need.
You can build an Explorer to be the exact SUV you need for daily driving and weekend adventures, so continue reading to below to see what’s changed and which Explorer is right for you.

New look
Like we said, the Explorer is a brand new design that is already turning heads on the road. This year’s Explorer offers a wide, bold front grille with LED headlights. The 2020 Explorer is offered in 10 exterior colors.
Inside the Explorer offers more space and the space that is offered is laid out in a more efficient pattern.
Since the Explorer is a third-row SUV, it’s the perfect choice for large families. This year’s Explorer offers a new easy access feature for the second or third row. The seats slide wide and make it easy for your kids to get in and out of the back seat safely.

As cargo goes, the Explorer has an all-new safe cargo system where you can store items in a bin under the trunk area. This allows for basically double the cargo room of previous models with all three rows up.
A new cargo mode does allow you to fold down portions, or all, of the second and third row and create the exact balance between cargo and passenger space.

The driver will appreciate the new design as well. The Explorer is laid out similar to the cockpit on an airplane, with buttons in logical spots and space arranged for maximum leg and hip room.
You’ll really love the optional 10-inch touchscreen to control radio, Bluetooth, technology, climate control and more.

Advanced Safety is Standard
One of the best features of the 2020 Ford Explorer is standard Ford Co-Pilot 360, Ford’s Advanced Safety Systems. Every Explorer has it, so you and everyone around is now safer on the road.
1. Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection – The Explorer can apply the brakes itself to avoid slower vehicles ahead. Pedestrian Detection assists when there’s a biker on the road or if someone runs across the street.
2. Blind Spot Information System – A light on your side mirror warns you of a vehicle in the blind spot.
3. Lane Keeping System – radar monitors the road lines to keep vehicles inside of their lane. If you start to sway without signaling, the vehicle will sway you back into your lane.
4. Auto High Beams – The high beams will automatically go on and off as you need them. If the high beams are on and someone approaches, the high beams automatically dim.
5. Backup Camera – A standard backup camera.

Other safety features you can add to an Explorer include Active Park Assist, the system that allows you to automatically park your car in a tight space. Other added safety options include adaptive cruise control with auto start-stop, evasive steering assist, and lane-centering assist. There’s also an optional 360-degree camera showing everything happening in all around your Explorer as you attempt to park.

Ford Explorer Engines
Three engines are available on the new 2020 Ford Explorer.
The standard engine is the 2.3L EcoBoost 1-4, built right here in Northeast Ohio. The 2.3L offers 300 horsepower and 310-lb.-ft of torque. Fuel economy reaches up to 27 highway MPG.
There’s a 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, also made right here in Ohio. It offers up to 400 horsepower and 415-lb. ft. of torque.
A third engine option is the 3.3L hybrid. When equipped with rear wheel drive, the Explorer has an EPA-estimated range of 500 miles per tank.

Ford Explorer Drive Train
The Explorer is now offered in rear wheel drive. You can still get four wheel drive, but rear wheel drive is a new highlight. Rear wheel drive architecture enables a sportier, more athletic design, improved on and off road capabilities and 600 pounds more in maximum towing capacity when properly equipped.
Intelligent four wheel drive with terrain management system is one of the best ways to travel in any weather. This drive train offers seven drive modes that adjust to the circumstances. There’s a trail mode for off-road adventures, deep snow for a rough morning commute, sand, slippery mode for ice, tow mode and even an eco mode for better fuel consumption and higher MPG.
All Explorers are equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift capabilities.

Ford Explorer Towing Capacity
When properly equipped, a Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,600 lbs. The Class III Trailer Tow Package is available with the 2.3L EcoBoost and 3.3L hybrid engine and comes standard with the 3.0L V6 EcoBoost.
Standard trailer sway control selectively brakes and adjusts engine power to maintain trailer control.

Ford Explorer ST
The Explorer ST is one of the marvels of modern engineering. It’s a sports car personality in a third-row SUV.
The ST takes this muscular engine with twin turbos and combines it with a 10-speed automatic transmission for a powertrain like nothing before it. With 400 horsepower plus 415 lb.-ft. of torque and a top speed of 143 mph, the 2020 ST is the most powerful Explorer ever.
Continuing with the sports theme, the Explorer ST includes a dual panel sunroof and leather seats.

Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto
Ford SYNC 3 now includes an app to tap in to your Amazon Alexa. By using the Ford+Alexa app and connecting via available SYNC 3 AppLink, you’ll have access to voice navigation, traffic information, over 30,000 skills, Amazon Prime shopping and it can even control your supported smart home devices. Stay connected, no matter where you are.
Equipped with other Amazon technologies, you can even have Alexa open and shut your garage doors, turn on or off lights and even enable or disable security systems. Again, these options require additional Amazon Echo technologies sold separately.
Available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow you to access your map, podcasts, songs and top apps from your phone. You can send a phone call or text message with your voice, and you’ll even have text messages read over the speakers.
